Deathwish - Deathwish

Deathwish is an upcoming Belgian metalcore band from the Brussels area. The self-titled EP has been out since the 1st of October and is available for purchase through their Bandcamp. They describe their music style as Dark Metalcore so let’s jump in.

The band contacted my other page where we do Dutch metal band reviews and I wanted to do the review through my own page and luckily it worked out well. I got the files and I started listening to it. With an into-riff like this, I can expect some cool stuff. A simple but effective riff lets the song start. Immediately I know how it is going to sound.

With their openings song ‘Siren’s Call’ the band introduces themselves as an average metalcore band. The simple drums can be effective but sadly with Deathwish, the drums are a little too repetitive during the song ‘Siren’s Call’. ‘Legions of Doom’ is up next.

With pretty much the same rhythm, the band introduces ‘Legions Of Doom’. It however has a memorable guitar riffs scattered throughout the song. Halfway through the song, the same riffs and drums are really getting repetitive. It feels like the songs isn’t a song but sections of music that have been written separately and have been put together.

‘The Martyr Complex’. Same drums again. The EP is getting very repetitive and that might put of people off listening to the ‘Deathwish’ EP. If the band is going to change that to better song-writing and song-structures, the band might be getting away from the puddle of bands that want to be the next Heaven Shall Burn.

‘VII’. I need to focus on other aspects of the songs because 75% of all the drum work is very repetitive. The vocals are really good in my opinion. The vocalist certainly does a great job. But don’t stay between the lines like the guitar. Go a little bit crazy, don’t try to be too tight. The guitars certainly have protentional to escape the repetitive aspect of the EP.

‘Your Nemesis’. Just skip the whole breakdown bits. Focus on the riffs and if you want to make breakdowns please make them fit into the song, don’t throw them anywhere between the songs when a good riff is being played. That could have caught people of guard. Try to be more unique and don’t draw between the lines. You all have qualities that are good enough to write a great full length/EP/demo but for the debut EP ‘Deathwish’, this doesn’t quite make the cut.

Overall the band has got potential. With some changes here and there, the band could be the next thing. 7 out of 10.
