Excommunion - Thronosis

Excommunion - Thronosis.jpg

The blackened-death metal band has signed a deal with Dark Descent Records to release this monster of an EP called ‘Thronosis’. The band produces old school death metal with a tad of black metal mixed into the sound. The old school death metal sound takes the upperhand and Excommunion does that very well. During the opening-track ‘Twilight Of Eschaton’, Excommunion mixed very slow old school death metal music with pounding double bass drum-work. That needs balls to do that but they manage to do it.

Many old school death metal bands lose my attention very fast but what keeps me listening to ‘Thronosis’, is the overall sound of the band. The ‘fat’ sound Excommunion has produced, I a known trademark in the modern day of old school death metal. Bands like Gravebomb, Wombbath and Melechesh you can expect to hear in the style of Excommunion.

What I especially like about the album, are the filthy vocals. The slow murky vocals add a lot of density to the songs. The guitars have an epic sound to them. In some degree, you can compare the density to Triptykon songs when Excommunion slows down. The songs are longer than the traditional 3 to 4-minute songs which are a standard in old school death metal.

I can hear that this band has something unique in their sound. If you are a fan of old school death metal mixed with a tad of black metal, then Excommunion is the band for you. Buy the cd through Dark Descent Records or the Europeans can get it through Everlasting Spew Records. Excommunion – Thronosis is a solid 9 out 10.
