Nucleus - The Colony

Nucleus - The Colony.jpg

This (Sci-Fi) old school death metal band listens to the name Nucleus. Nucleus was formed in 2012 by Dave, Dan, Daniel and Mike. After several rehearsals they released their first demo called 'Contact' in 2012, they decided to release another EP. They did in August 2013 and it is called 'The Colony'.

'The Colony' starts with a live news report out of the '60. It is about alien abduction. The intro '' First Contact' smoothly turns into the death metal that I was expecting. The first song 'Inferior Species'  immediately reminds me of the music style that Obituary has. I am glad that it isn't the modern death metal style (which is also good) but it has this old raw rasping feeling about it and only the old death metal bands (Death,Nocturnus, Morbid Angel) have done that.

The slow headbanging continues with the next song 'Mechanical Warfare'.  This song is far more technical than 'Inferior Species' but it still has that headbang factor which every metalhead likes.

What does bother me is that you clearly can hear de double bass over all the other instruments. but after a few songs you won't even notice it anymore.

'Biopsy' is a song that Nucleus also put on their demo 'Contact' and now has remastered it for this album. Slow, heavy and less technical (but still awesome) than the other songs on this EP.

'Echoes From The Abyss' is also a song from their previous release 'Contact'. This is their longest song on the EP which takes over 5 minutes to listen to. In this song you'll hear the full arsenal of riffs and solo's that Nucleus has in store. It is heavy, dragging and raw like bands as Master/Obituary/Gorefest.

On the sixth place we have the song 'The Great Poison'. What seems to be their slowest song turns out to be their fastest song on the EP. The changing pace in melody of the song is for my a big surprise  but in some way Nucleus make it still awesome and not like a abrupt change that you will hear in many Metalcore/Deathcore songs.

The final song of the EP is the title song 'The Colony'.  Not the perfect song to end this EP but nonetheless it is still a good 5 minute song with a melodic almost black metal part in it, which also sounds amazing.
