Soulecy - Transience

Soulecy is a Dutch progressive black metal band from Utrecht. Formed in early 2010, these 4 guys have released their self-titled demo. Not officially through a label but only copies were given out by the guys themselves. After several line-up changes, Soulecy have released their first full length ‘Nautical Twilight’ throughout Depressive Illusions Records in 2012. Now, 2 years later, they prepared a new record. Their latest release Transience which is released through Senseless Life Records.
Soulecy is recommended by my awesome friends in MetalFromNL. So thanks to them! As some of you guys/girls already know, I don’t really like progressive/post stuff, but in recent reviews I said that I’m more open to those genres and boy, Soulecy let me swallow my words. Their first track ‘7 Days Till Sleep’ is amazingly balanced throughout the whole song. This instrumental song prepares you for the organized chaos that is coming towards you.
Still waiting for the vocals to come in the second song, that really bothers me but since I listen to many styles of black metal, this is more of a common issue. Soulecy call themselves Post Black Metal which to me could be easily Depressive Black Metal. The continuing riffs on the song ‘Transience’ and now appearing distant chants from the singer and the appearing guest vocalist let you enter in a weird trance where everything is just good. A good song but it did take a long while for the song to get going.
Now there is finally a song where there are more lyrics involved. I absolutely love ‘Lucid Dreams’ which is the title of the song. However the guitar solos aren’t well placed in my opinion. They could’ve been left out of the song. Being the shortest song on the EP, it is ironic that this one makes the most impression on me.
Now I finally can understand why Soulecy isn’t called depressive black metal or just normal black metal. The last song ‘Drunk, Drugged, Fucked’ is in my opinion the style Soulecy is looking for. It reminds me of another Dutch progressive black metal band Styxian Industries. To me this isn’t my favourite but it has some cool elements in it that I do like.
Overall the EP ‘Transience’ has surprised me with that there is more in metal that I must discover. Therefor I give this EP a 8 out of 10 points.
