Dephosphorus - Planetoktonos

Dephosphorus - Planetoktonos.jpg

Being signed to Selfmadegod Records for over 8 years, Dephosphorus have been hammering their way since 2011 when they released their first EP ‘Axiom’. Releasing their first debut ‘Night Sky Transform’ on the label 7 Degrees Records in 2012, Dephosphorus have been releasing their astrogrinding albums through Selfmadegod Records which is a perfect choice for their style of death/grind. The Greeks have been building their name in the (Greek) scene for a while and now, after a 5 year silence, they’ve released their 2025 release ‘Planetoktonos’.

So, how did I discover them? You guessed it, Bandcamp. Bandcamp has been a blessing to my musical discoveries but also a nightmare for my wallet. And that has exactly happened once again. I bought the vinyl and the cd for myself since when I listened to the first few tracks, Dephosphorus immediately convinced me to purchase it. The amazing artwork by ‘Graphic No Jutsu’ also helped a lot since that dragged me into their music to begin with. To be honest, I did not expect a death/grind, or how they like to call it ‘Astrogrind’, to be linked with this beauty of an artwork. Leaning on the heavy use of space for a while, the artwork is linking a lot to albums like Nocturnus’s ‘Thresholds’, Nucleus’s ‘Entity’ and Imperialist’s ‘Cipher to name a few death and black metal bands that use spaceships in their artwork. I guess I really like spaceships on metal albums.

Having a self-proclaimed astrogrind band using this kind of artwork was unexpected for me. Either way, it absolutely fits the whole vibe of ‘Planetoktonos’. The songs are not the expected 2-ish minutes long but Dephosphorus throws a couple of fat 4 minute tracks right at you. Also, if you like the generic grindcore yelling voice, you will have a bit of a different experience while listening to ‘Planetoktonos’. The vocals from Panos do tend to go more to the black/sludge style of Amenra, which I absolutely don’t mind. He executes the vocals in a way that I’ve never heard anyone do in grindcore. I don’t listen to grindcore as my ‘main’ genre but I did hear quite a few albums here and there to comfortably say that this is not the most common style of vocals in the genre.

The overall sound of the band is a lot more death/grind but more old school death metal style than like say Aborted or Wormrot but Dephosphorus hangs more to the grindcore style of Nasum and Misery Index. Of course with their own twist to it. All of the members have (or are) in different style bands besides Dephosphorus like black/death/grind and avantgarde style of metal bands which summarizes the various styles that are being used during ‘Planetoktonos’. It’s refreshing to hear a fresh take on the style of grindcore, being their own Astrogrind. It fits the sound perfectly. There are moments where your head keeps bopping up and down and a quite lot of times where you are just embracing the unique style that Dephosphorus is bringing to the table.

There are no standout tracks on ‘Planetoktonos’ because the whole album is just a refreshing bliss to listen to. An uptempo space-ridden beast filled with hooks that will make you listen to ‘Planetoktonos’ more and more. Certainly grab this album if you like what you hear because this album deserves to be heard more. Also the band needs to be booked by more Dutch bookers because this band would fit perfectly on Dutch festivals like Stonehenge and Herrie. I will certainly keep an eye out for Dephosphorus and will be enjoying ‘Planetoktonos’ and will be discovering their previous records because I absolutely love their style called ‘Astrogrind’.
